Regional
Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island participate in the Accelerator, and several state program pages now specifically tell customers that additional instant incentives may be available through distributors and contractors at the point of sale through the Accelerator.

Effective September 1, 2026, Energize Connecticut’s Energy Optimization incentive increased from $1,000 to $1,500 per ton for qualifying installations, with combined incentives capped at $10,000. Applies when qualifying heat pumps replace or integrate with natural gas, oil, propane, or electric resistance as the primary heating source.
March 23, 2026
Qualifying heat pumps replacing electric resistance heat can receive $2,000 per ton for installations beginning March 23, 2026 (up from $1,250/ton earlier in the year). Pre-verification required. Standard qualifying air-source heat pumps remain $250/ton.
January 1, 2026
Efficiency Maine currently offers a $1,150 instant discount or rebate on qualifying ENERGY STAR heat-pump water heaters — and lists The Granite Group among its participating options.
January 1, 2026
New Hampshire and Clean Heat Rhode Island have explicitly made R-410A heat-pump equipment ineligible for their qualified-product programs beginning January 1, 2026, in accordance with the refrigerant transition.
Federal Tax Credit Update
The residential federal heat-pump tax credit expired December 31, 2025 — installations and expenditures after that date no longer qualify.
Heat pump incentives (2026 structure)
Whole-home: $2,650/ton, up to $8,500. Partial-home: $1,125/ton, up to $8,500. Basic installations: $250/ton, up to $2,500. Partial-home projects can also qualify for a $500 sizing bonus and a $500 weatherization bonus.
Equipment requirements
Equipment must meet ENERGY STAR Cold Climate requirements and appear on the Mass Save qualified-products list.
Federal tax credit note
Mass Save explicitly notes that the federal residential heat-pump tax credit expired at the end of 2025 — installations and expenditures after December 31, 2025 no longer qualify for that credit.
Heat pump water heaters
Currently $750/unit, while qualifying split-system heat-pump water heaters receive $1,500/system.
Energy Optimization incentive
The incentive increased from $1,000/ton to $1,500/ton for qualifying installations occurring on or after September 1, 2026, with combined incentives capped at $10,000. The program applies when qualifying heat pumps replace or integrate with natural gas, oil, propane, or electric resistance as the primary heating source.
Heat pump incentives
Standard qualifying air-source heat pumps remain $250/ton. For qualifying systems replacing electric resistance heat, installations from January 1 through March 22 received $1,250/ton, while installations beginning March 23, 2026 receive $2,000/ton — pre-verification required. NHSaves calculates rebate tonnage from AHRI cooling capacity ÷ 12,000.
Refrigerant transition
Beginning January 1, 2026, R-410A heat-pump models were removed from the NHSaves HPQPL and are no longer rebate eligible, in accordance with the refrigerant transition.
Heat pump water heaters
The incentive is currently $900, for units up to 85 gallons, subject to the listed efficiency requirements.
Heat pump incentives (per outdoor unit)
Efficiency Maine pays per rebate-eligible outdoor unit: $3,000/unit for low-income households (up to $9,000), $2,000/unit for moderate-income (up to $6,000), and $1,000/unit at any income (up to $3,000). Eligible single-zone units can receive the rebate; multi-zone heat pumps do not receive the individual equipment rebate, although their design-temperature heating capacity can count toward the home’s required heating capacity.

Heat Pump Accelerator
Maine is participating in the New England Heat Pump Accelerator, with roughly $43 million allocated to Maine. Much of the state’s Accelerator activity is focused on heat-pump water heater incentives plus whole-home heat-pump pilot projects.
Heat pump incentives
For eligible households, the current incentive is 60% of eligible heat-pump equipment and installation cost, capped at $11,500 for space heating. Equipment must meet the program’s cold-climate criteria and appear on the Rhode Island NEEP list. Beginning January 1, 2026, R-410A equipment is ineligible.
Water heaters and caps
Clean Heat RI offers $2,500 for qualifying heat-pump water heaters, with an overall lifetime incentive cap of $18,000 per property. Rhode Island utility incentives may exist in addition to Clean Heat RI, subject to their respective eligibility rules.
Ductless heat pumps
Instant discounts of $375 for systems ≤2 tons and $475 for systems >2 tons, with additional income and utility incentives potentially available.
Ducted heat pumps
Ducted systems can receive substantially larger incentives — Efficiency Vermont describes its 2026 heating incentives as reaching up to $2,200 for ducted heat pumps.
Heat pump water heaters
$600 for qualifying units, plus another $400 for income-eligible households — as much as $1,000.
